Updated COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements for Travellers Using Regulated Transportation

The Canadian government has recently released an update on travel requirements for federally regulated modes of transportation. As of October 30, 2021, travelers and employees departing by plane, rail, or cruise ship must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The new requirements apply both to domestic and international flights departing from Canadian airports, federally regulated railways, and cruise ships that are 24 hours or longer.

The government will allow a transition period of one month for those who are in the process of being vaccinated. By November 30, all passengers must be fully vaccinated with some exceptions for specific situations, including emergency travel and for those who cannot receive the vaccine for a medical reason. During this transition period, travellers that are in the process of being vaccinated must show a valid COVID-19 molecular test within 72 hours before travel.

The newly introduced requirements will also apply to employees in the federally regulated transportation sector. These organizations will be required to implement a mandatory vaccination policy to begin October 30.

The Canadian government is also currently working on a Pan-Canadian proof of vaccination that can be used for international travel. This credential will make it quicker and easier for travellers to provide their proof of vaccination to transportation operators.
