Trump wins U.S. Election: U.S. To Canada Immigration

Published on: November 6th, 2024

After beating Kamala Harris in the U.S. presidential election, Donald Trump is back in the White House as the 47th president of the United States for the next four years. Many people are wondering how his presidency will change the immigration landscape of the United States and in turn, Canada.

While this election outcome may sound worrisome to some, there are various options and possibilities available to those thinking about settling in Canada.

Seeking Refuge in Canada

As the U.S. faces stricter immigration rules, many people seeking safety are looking to Canada. Trump stated that he plans to start a mass deportation effort in the United States, aiming to send at least 10 million undocumented immigrants back to their home countries.

In an interview with CBC News, Terri Givens, a political science professor stated that the pressure on the Canadian system can be huge if the mass deportation is implemented. Givens added that it could mean more individuals trying to come to Canada both legally and illegally.

This trend highlights the need for the U.S. and Canadian governments to work together. Both countries will need to cooperate to help those looking for safety without negatively impacting the economy.

“I know President Trump and I will work together to create more opportunity, prosperity, and security for both of our nations,” Trudeau said on X, previously known as Twitter, indicating a commitment to working together as the future unfolds for both countries.

As both countries adjust to this new landscape, the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, Chrystia Freeland, reassured Canadians in her interview with CBC stating, “There is no country in the world better positioned to have an excellent relationship with the United States and better positioned to thrive no matter who Americans choose…we are going to be great no matter what.”

New Opportunities

Canada offers many pathways for potential immigrants. Programs such as Express Entry allow skilled workers to apply for permanent residency, the Start-Up Visa Program supports entrepreneurs who have new innovative ideas, and CUSMA work permits make it easier for Americans to work in Canada. These are only a few of Canada’s immigration programs that may open doors for Americans seeking new opportunities in Canada.
