Canada Permanent Residence Immigration Tips International Students
Québec Immigration regulations have been recently updated and an important change is now effect for international students who are applying to the Québec Experience Program (PEQ).
Although new applications for the Graduate stream under PEQ have been paused since October 31, 2024, and will remain closed until June 30, 2025, the new regulation now allows students to start a second program of studies in Québec after they have received their first diploma.
This change gives students more flexibility, allowing them to continue their education and still be eligible for the PEQ, which was not possible under the previous rules.
Under the old regulation, students applying through PEQ were not allowed to begin a new program of studies in Québec after they had completed their diploma. This meant that once students finished their program, they couldn’t go back to school to improve their skills or study something else, even if they wanted to. This restriction was problematic for students who wanted to gain more qualifications, change careers, or continue their education in Québec.
As of November 23, 2024, the new regulation has removed the restriction that prevented students from starting a second program after they had completed their studies. Now, students who have earned a diploma from a Québec educational institution can enroll in another program of studies and still be eligible for the PEQ. This change offers more opportunities for students to further their qualifications, explore new career paths, or gain additional skills without worrying about losing their eligibility for permanent residency in Québec.
The removal of the restriction on starting a second program of studies under the Québec Experience Program is a positive change. It gives international students more freedom and flexibility while pursuing permanent residency in Québec. The ability to continue studying allows students to become more skilled in their fields or develop expertise in other areas. This helps them build stronger careers and make a bigger impact on the job market.
Many industries now require people to keep learning throughout their careers. This change benefits not only students but also Québec’s economy. By allowing graduates to continue their studies, the province encourages skilled individuals to stay, grow professionally, and contribute to labour market demands.
For more details on the changes, you can check both the old and new regulations to understand how these updates may affect your eligibility and opportunities under the PEQ. For further guidance it would be important to contact an immigration lawyer as part of the application requires you to demonstrate your intent to work in Quebec.
