Express Entry Canada: Exciting Changes in 2025

Published on: January 8th, 2025

With the Canadian governments immigration targets established for 2025-2027, this is an exciting opportunity to prepare and submit your profile into the express entry pool.

As most countries evolve with their immigration programs to be able to address labor shortages within their country and cater their programs to fill gaps in their ageing populations, Canada is taking their full leap, as they always have, doing the same starting in 2025.

If you are looking to submit your application for express entry, it is important to understand these changes and what they mean for you and your application.

Express Entry

Express entry is a point-based immigration program. There are three tiers to this program that you may be eligible to apply for. The federal skilled worker program, the federal skilled trades program and Canadian experience class. Within in these programs and express entry, there are also provincial nominee programs (PNP’s). These programs are catered to their respective province, and they aim to fulfill the labor shortages in their province. Most PNP’s require you to have a valid express entry profile to be able to submit an expression of interest (EOI) into the province you are eligible to apply for.

Occupation Draws

In 2023, the Canadian government implemented occupation draws. This means that the target was catered to those that carried skilled work experience in specific occupations. The categories include those in healthcare, STEM, trade, transport, agriculture and French speakers.

French Speakers

Canada is a bilingual country and the need to keep both languages prominent in Canada is priority. Some provinces are more French than others, however they need more immigrants that speak French to maintain their bilingualism. That said, many provinces are selecting candidates fluent in French to move to their province and share add value.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

Provincial nominee programs are mostly managed by the federal system of express entry. Provinces have their own rule and regulations in place to be able to cater to their needs as a province. Those needs can change and evolve with time and therefore it is important to stay abreast with PNP’s and monitor changes to the programs available.

Canadian Experience Class

Canadian experience class is a program that caters to those who have gained a minimum of one year of skilled work experience in Canada. If you are in Canada with a valid temporary status and are working in a position that is considered to be skilled employment, this could be your opportunity to become a permanent resident.

With all these changes within immigration and provinces, targeted draws provide more opportunity for applicants to be selected.
